Information

If you don’t have enough space left to install apps from the market, please Restore RootFS Storage

If you want to downgrade your firmware to an older version, please Restore RootFS Storage

Introduction

Our gateways and SBCs have a built in flash memory with a limited amount of storage space. Over the years the size of our firmware has increased, by updating important security libraries and introducing new functions to the system.

With the increased amount of storage used by the system programs and libraries, we want to ensure that the system does not run out of storage space for future updates and improvements,
as well as ensuring a long lifespan of the flash memory itself. This is why we decided to make room on the main root file system by moving certain system programs to a different partition.

This tutorial will show you

  • how to clean / optimise the root file system

  • how to restore the root file system to the old state

With the Upgrade to the 21.02 firmware package, some system programs are moved to another partition automatically if there is enough space left.

For further technical information about this topic, please refer to the bottom of this page or click here.

Manage your RootFS Storage

Restoring RootFS Storage / Revert old RootFS

When downgrading the firmware, you may get an error message “inappropriate rootfs”. Please follow the steps down below. The value in the Miscellaneous-Settings is set automatically.

For this you will need to reboot your device in Normal-Mode again.

In the case that you want to downgrade to an older firmware or install bigger apps (like asterisk-core from the Market), it is recommended restore the old state of the root partition.

This is possible by following these steps:

  • Go to Miscellaneous-Settings and use the following experimental option: restoring_rootfs=1

  • A new tab will appear and it will be possible to restore the old RootFS with the click of a button

  • If successful, the experimental option will automatically disappear. Please follow further instructions.

Freeing RootFS Storage / Make room on the main partition

This procedure is automatically performed when updating to firmware version appfs-21.02 and does not need to be performed again.

In the case that that the RootFS storage is almost full, the device may block certain functions to ensure further operation of the device. In this case it is highly recommended to clean up the apps space and stick to the following steps:

  • Go to Miscellaneous-Settings and use the following experimental option: freeing_rootfs=1

  • A new tab will appear and it will be possible to free storage in the RootFS with the click of a button

  • If successful, the experimental option will automatically disappear. Please follow further instructions.
